Since December 2006 I have been helping children in Sri Lanka, at Hikkaduwa, which I had visited with my son and where the tsunami caused devastating damages and killed hundreds of people.
The House
I had a simple but nice brick house built for a young mother, Sandya, with two school-age children, who is working as a waitress to support her family. Her husband abandoned them and she must now care for her children, her elderly mother, and her mentally unstable sister. She lived in a mud house with a laminate roof that cannon withstand monsoon rains and was unsafe for the family.
Now they live away from leaky ceilings, sleep on beds instead of matts, have a bathroom with modern sanitation systems, a table with chairs, and Sandya’s waitressing job allows them to maintain a good lifestyle.
The Well Water
I had a public well restored and cleaned, which is used by everyone in the village. They have no modern bathroom facilities in their homes, because they live in simple mud huts, and they use this well to wash clothes, to bathe, and for drinking water.
Now this well is in good condition, and the well is periodically maintained.
Near the well I had a small room built where women can change their clothes after their bath, because as they bathe in public they do so fully clothed.
The Association Fabio Jonathan solved the problems of Sandya’s home and the public well. After having realized these two goals, I started to think of giving free school in addition to the public one in order to teach English and computer literacy.
I started by looking for a place to hold lessons and I met Monk Kassapa at the Pathana Temple who offered a place free of charge.
